James W. Covert

James Way Covert (born September 2, 1842 in Oyster Bay , New York , † May 16, 1910 in Brooklyn , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1877 and 1881 and between 1889 and 1895 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Way Covert was born and raised in Oyster Bay approximately three and a half years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools and received a science education in Locust Valley, New York. Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in the second year of the Civil War and then began practicing in Flushing . He served as assistant prosecuting attorney in Queens . After the war between 1867 and 1870 he was school district commissioner. He then worked between 1870 and 1874 as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Queens.

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1872. In the 1876 ​​congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the first constituency of New York, where he succeeded Henry B on March 4, 1877 Metcalfe took over. After a successful re-election in 1878 , he declined to run again in 1880 and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1881 . During his tenure as a Congressman, he chaired the Committee on Agriculture ( 46th Congress ). He then sat in the New York Senate in 1882 and 1883 . In the congressional elections of 1888 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the first constituency of New York, where he succeeded Perry Belmont on March 4, 1889 . He was re-elected twice in a row. Then he renounced in 1894 to run again and resigned after March 3, 1895 from the Congress. During this time he chaired the Committee on Patents ( 53rd Congress ). The following year he moved to Brooklyn, where he worked as a lawyer again. He died there on May 16, 1910 and was then buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth .
