William Bernard Barry

William Bernard Barry (born July 21, 1902 in County Mayo , Ireland , † October 20, 1946 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1935 and 1946 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Bernard Barry was born in County Mayo a few weeks before Edward VII's accession to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland . His family immigrated to the United States in 1907 and settled in Queens . He attended public schools there. He then graduated from New York University in New York City in 1925 and from its Law School in 1929. After receiving his bar license in 1929, he began practicing in New York City. He served as an assistant district attorney in Queens from 1932 to 1933 and then from 1933 to 1935 as a special federal attorney for the Department of Justice. He was also a member of the Queens Democratic Executive Committee between 1930 and 1935 .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . Barry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York on November 5, 1935 , to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William F. Brunner . In the following congressional elections in 1936 , he was elected to the US House of Representatives for a full term in the second constituency of New York and then re-elected three times in a row. In 1944 he ran for a seat in Congress in the fourth constituency of New York. After a successful election, he succeeded John J. Rooney on January 4, 1945 . Barry died on October 20, 1946 in New York City. His body was then interred in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery in Flushing . At his death he was already nominated for the 80th Congress .
