Henry Bleecker Metcalfe (born January 20, 1805 in Albany , New York , † February 7, 1881 in Richmond , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Bleecker Metcalfe was born about seven and a half years before the outbreak of the British-American War in Albany and spent the first few years there. His family moved to New York City in 1811, and from there to Richmond County in 1816 . He studied law and began practicing in New York City in 1826 after receiving his license to practice law. Between 1826 and 1832 he was a prosecuting attorney in Richmond County. He was elected district judge in 1840 and worked in this position until his resignation in 1841. Between 1847 and 1875 he worked again as a district judge. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1874 Metcalfe was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry J. Scudder on March 4, 1875 . Since he refused to run again in 1876 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1877 . During his time as a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings . He died in Richmond on February 7, 1881 and was then buried in Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp .
