Philip Van Cortlandt (born August 21, 1749 in New York City , † November 21, 1831 in Croton , Westchester County , New York ) was an American general and politician. He was the brother of Congressman Pierre Van Cortlandt, Jr.

Career

Philip Van Cortlandt studied classical antiquity and attended Coldenham Academy . He then worked as a civil engineer. He also pursued a political and military career. He was a member of the New York Provincial Congress in 1775. After the outbreak of the American War of Independence , he enlisted in the Continental Army . He was a lieutenant colonel at the time . He was appointed Brigadier General for his performance in the siege of Yorktown under General Lafayette . Van Cortlandt was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1788 to 1790 . During this time he ratified the US Constitution as a delegate in 1788 . Then he was a member of the New York Senate between 1791 and 1793 . Van Cortlandt was elected to the 3rd US Congress and re - elected as a Democratic Republican to the seven subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1793 to March 3, 1809 . During this time he also worked as a supervisor for Cortlandt (New York), school representative and road master . He was also engaged in agriculture and was a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati . He died in 1831 at Van Cortlandt Manor near Croton (New York) and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Peekskill (New York).
