Abraham H. Schenck

Abraham Henry Schenck (born January 22, 1775 in Matteawan (now Beacon ), New York Province, † June 1, 1831 in Fishkill , New York) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Henry Schenck was born in Matteawan about three months before the outbreak of the War of Independence . He received an extensive English schooling. Then he went on to manufacture machines. Between 1804 and 1806 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . As an opponent of too strong a central government, he joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the congressional elections of 1814 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas J. Oakley on March 4, 1815 . He retired from the after March 3, 1817 Congress of. Then he went to the manufacture of cotton goods . He died in Fishkill on June 1, 1831 and was buried in the Dutch Reform Churchyard in Beacon. Congressman Isaac Teller was his nephew.
