Gregory Weldon Meeks (* 25. September 1953 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , and since 1998 a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the State of New York .

biography

Gregory Weldon Meeks was born in New York City. He attended Adelphi University . He graduated from Howard University with a law degree . Meeks served as the assistant district attorney and drug criminal prosecutor for the City of New York. He was also a member of a commission of inquiry that dealt with misconduct and organized crime. He also served as a judge overseer for the New York Workers Compensation System. In 1992 he was elected to the New York State Assembly . He was a member of the State Assembly until his election to the US House of Representatives.

In 1998 he was elected to the US House of Representatives to succeed Floyd H. Flake for New York's sixth congressional district. The district covers much of Queens . The John F. Kennedy International Airport is also located in this district. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. Since 2013, he has represented the fifth constituency of his state in Congress. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In the House of Representatives, he is or was a member of the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Foreign Affairs and a total of three sub-committees.

Meeks is married to Simone Marie Meeks. He lives in Queens and is a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church .
