Walter Underhill

Walter Underhill (born September 12, 1795 in New York City , † August 17, 1866 in Whitestone , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1851 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Underhill was born and raised in New York City in the late 18th century. He enjoyed a good education and then worked as a trustee in the Houses of Refuge . Underhill was New York City's Chamberlain for several years. He then sat on the Board of Directors of the Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents of New York City from 1845 to 1866 and as its treasurer from 1857 to 1866. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1848 Underhill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of New York , where he succeeded William B. Maclay on March 4, 1851 . Since he refused to run again in 1850 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1851 . In 1853 he became President of Mechanics & Traders' Insurance Co. in New York City, a position he held until his death on August 17, 1866 in Whitestone. His body was interred in Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City.
