Walter Patterson (politician)

Walter Patterson (* 1780s in Columbia County , New York , † November 5, 1852 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Patterson was born in Columbia County at the time of the Revolutionary War . He enjoyed a good education. Patterson studied law and then worked as a prosecutor ( attorney ) in Ancram . He also worked in agriculture and pursued several business ventures, including running the Ancram Iron Works . Patterson then served as quartermaster in the Twelfth Infantry Brigade of the New York National Guard . In 1818 he was a member of the New York State Assembly and served as Town Supervisor of Ancram in 1821 and 1823 . Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party . In the 1820 congressional elections , Patterson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded James Strong on March 4, 1821 . He retired from the after March 3, 1823 Congress of. He later moved to Livingston , where he was appointed postmaster and served as town supervisor between 1826 and 1828. In 1828 he was appointed associate justice at Columbia County Court , a position he held until 1830. Patterson moved to Philadelphia in the 1840s, where he worked as a lawyer until his death on November 5, 1852.
