Jeremiah Van Rensselaer

Jeremiah Van Rensselaer (born August 27, 1738 in New York Province, † February 19, 1810 in Albany , New York ) was an American politician who represented New York in both Houses of Representatives. He was also the father of Solomon Van Vechten Van Rensselaer and cousin of Killian K. Van Rensselaer , who was also an MP.

Jeremiah Van Rensselaer was the son of John Van Rensselaer (1708–1793) and angel livingston Van Rensselaer, who died before Jeremiah was ten years old. He received private lessons at her manor "Rensselaerswyck", then attended a private school in Albany (New York) and then went to the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University ), where he graduated in 1758.

Two years later, in 1760, he married Judith Bayard, but she soon passed away. After her death he married a second time, Lena Lansing. The couple had a child, Solomon Van Vechten Van Rensselaer, in February 1764.

Rensselaer became a real estate agent, dealer, and surveyor. In 1766 he was one of the signatories of the Statute ( Engl. Constitution ) of the Albany Sons of Liberty and was a member of Albany's Committee of Safety . During the American Revolutionary War , he was an ensign in the Third Regiment of the New York Line, where he served as paymaster.

He was elected to the 1st US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1791 in the US House of Representatives . During his re-election attempt in the 2nd US Congress , he suffered a defeat. Then in 1789 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He was also a member of the first board of directors of the Bank of Albany in 1791 and president of the bank from 1798 to 1806.

Van Rensselaer was Lieutenant Governor of New York under Governor George Clinton from 1801 to 1804 . Then in 1804 he was curator of the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary at Albany.

He died in Albany in 1810 and was then buried in the Dutch Reformed Cemetery , although his body was later reburied in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands (New York).
