Floyd Harold Flake (born January 30, 1945 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1997 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Floyd Flake attended the public schools in Houston ( Texas ). In 1970 he graduated from Wilberforce University in Ohio . He then studied between 1974 and 1976 at Northeastern University in Boston ( Massachusetts ). From 1980 to 1984 he was enrolled at St. John's University in Jamaica (New York). He also graduated from United Theological Seminary in Dayton , Ohio. Flake worked full-time between 1976 and 1986 as a minister at the Allen AME Church in Jamaica (New York). At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1986 he initially failed in a congressional by-election.

In the regular congressional elections of 1986 Flake was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Alton R. Waldon on January 3, 1987 . After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on November 17, 1997 . In 1990, he and his wife were charged with embezzling church funds. Both were acquitted by the court.

Since the end of his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Floyd Flake has returned to pastor the Allen AME Church in Jamaica. Between 2002 and 2008 he was also President of Wilberforce University . He is also involved in the Aqueduct Race Track Entertainment Group , which, among other things, manufactured and installed slot machines for casinos in the Aqueduct Racetrack horse racing center .
