Frederick Augustus Conkling (born August 22, 1816 in Canajoharie , New York , † September 18, 1891 in New York City ) was an American officer and politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Frederick Augustus Conkling was born in Canajoharie about a year and a half after the end of the British-American War . He pursued classical studies and attended the Albany Academy . Conkling did business in New York City . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1854, 1859, and 1860 . After the outbreak of the Civil War , he set up the 84th regiment of the New York Volunteers in June 1861  and served there as a colonel . He took part in the Shenandoah Valley campaign . After the war he was one of the co-founders of the West Side Savings Bank in New York City and served as its president for many years. He then became president of the Aetna Fire Insurance Co. in Hartford ( Connecticut ) - a position he held until its liquidation in 1880th

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1860 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Cochrane on March 4, 1861 . Two years later he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1863 Congress of.

Conkling ran unsuccessfully as Republican for Mayor of New York City in 1868. He was also the author of numerous pamphlets on political, economic and scientific topics. He died on September 18, 1891 in New York City and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn .

Congressman Alfred Conkling was his father, Congressman and US Senator Roscoe Conkling his brother.
