Canjoharie is a city in Montgomery County in the state of New York in the United States . The name means "the pot that washes itself" in the Mohawk language , referring to the Canajoharie Boiling Pot, a waterfall in Canajoharie Creek, a river south of the city.
It is east of Utica and west of Amsterdam and south of the Mohawk River on the southern border of the county. New York State Route 5S runs through the city (Church Street) .
The Erie Canal runs north of the city . At the 2010 census, Canajoharie had 3,730 residents.
history
The city is near an earlier settlement of the same name by the Mohawk Indians, who the English later called Upper Castle.
Around 1730, German emigrants began to settle in the area, so-called " German Palatines ", who had come to the USA as a result of the mass emigration of the Palatinate in 1709. Dutch and English followed, which led to the Mohawk adopting certain European customs, particularly from the English.
The modern city was founded in 1788. It was destroyed by fire three times before an ordinance banned the construction of wooden houses. As a result, many of the older houses are built of brick or field stone.
In 1824 the Canajoharie Academy was opened, a private school that was integrated into the public school system in 1876. The director of the school's women's department was the well-known suffragette Susan B. Anthony from 1848 to 1850 .
In 1865 the city already had 4,248 inhabitants.
In 1891 the company Beech-Nut was founded in Canajoharie , a manufacturer of infant and baby food. For a long time he was the city's most important employer. In 2011 the company was relocated to a newly built factory in the neighboring city of Florida .
Attractions
- A striking building in the city is the historic West Hill School, which was built from 1891 to 1893 according to plans by the architect Archimedes Russell (1840–1915). In 2002 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
- The Arkell Museum, which was founded in 1927 by Bartlett Arkell, the first president of the Beech-Nut company, is also important.
