Samuel Jones Wilkin (born December 17, 1793 in Goshen , Orange County , New York , † March 11, 1866 there ) was an American politician . He was the son of US Congressman James W. Wilkin .

Career

Samuel Jones Wilkin graduated from Princeton College in 1812 . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1815 and then began practicing in Goshen. Wilkin served in the New York State Assembly in 1824 and 1825 . Politically, he belonged to the anti-Jacksonian faction . In the 1830 congressional election , Wilkin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel W. Eager on March 4, 1831 . He retired from the after March 3, 1833 Congress of. After the founding of the Whig Party , he joined this and ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of New York in 1844 . Then he sat in the New York Senate in 1848 and 1849 . In 1850 he worked as a canal appraiser . He died in Goshen on March 11, 1866 and was buried in Slate Hill Cemetery .
