Peter Silvester (born 1734 at Shelter Island , Suffolk County , New York Province, † October 15, 1808 in Kinderhook , Columbia County , New York ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician. He was the grandfather of US MP Peter Henry Silvester .

Career

Peter Silvester completed his preparatory studies and studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1763 and then began practicing in Albany, New York. Silvester was a member of the Albany Common Council in 1772 and a member of the Committee of Safety in 1774 . Then he served in both the first and second provincial congresses in 1775 and 1776. During this time he moved to Kinderhook, where he continued his practice as a lawyer. New Year's Eve was appointed judge in the Court of Common Pleas of Columbia County in 1786 . In addition, he was regent at the University of the State of New York between 1787 and 1808active. He was elected to the 1st US Congress as a pro-administration candidate and re - elected to the subsequent 2nd US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1793. New Year's Eve was twice a member of the New York State Assembly , the first time in 1788 and the second time between 1803 and 1806. He was also a member of the New York Senate between 1796 and 1800 . After the end of his last term in the Assembly, he withdrew from public life. He died in Kinderhook in 1808 and was buried in the Old Van Schaack Cemetery , where the Reformed Dutch Church was built in 1814 .
