Charles Johnston (politician)

Charles Johnston (born February 14, 1793 in Salisbury , Connecticut , † September 1, 1845 in Poughkeepsie , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Johnston attended community schools. Then he moved to Poughkeepsie. Johnston was studying law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. Politically, Johnston was a Whig Party member. In the congressional elections of 1838 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Obadiah Titus on March 4, 1839 . In 1840 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1841 . He then worked as a lawyer in Poughkeepsie until his death on September 1, 1845. His body was buried in the cemetery of Christ Episcopal Church and reburied in the Rural Cemetery in 1861 .
