Robert Campbell (politician, 1808)

Robert Campbell (born May 1, 1808 in Bath , Steuben County , New York , † July 16, 1870 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician. He was the son of Robert Campbell († 1849), who immigrated from Glasgow ( Scotland ) to the United States in 1794 and then settled in Bath.

Career

Robert Campbell attended Geneva Academy and then the local college. He then trained with a lawyer, was admitted to the bar and then began practicing in Bath. He was married to Frances Fowler. The couple had two sons, Clarence and Frank Campbell .

Robert served as a delegate for the Democratic Party at the New York Constituent Assembly in 1846 , but switched to the Free Soil Party in 1848 and later to the Republican Party . Between 1859 and 1862 he held the office of Lieutenant Governor of New York under Governor Edwin D. Morgan .

He was buried in Grove Cemetery in Bath, New York. His home, better known as the Campbell-Rumsey House , was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
