Timothy Lester Woodruff (born August 4, 1858 in New Haven , New Haven County , Connecticut , † October 12, 1913 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was the son of US MP John Woodruff .

Private life

Timothy Lester Woodruff graduated from Yale University in 1879 .

Before he ran for the office of Lieutenant Governor of New York, he bought a hunting lodge on Sumner Lake in the Adirondacks and renamed it after his wife Cora. Over time the name changed to Lake Kora . After buying the area, Woodruff decided to build a camp around it and named it Kamp Kill Kare , where he was an active fisherman. The property is located in Hamilton County near Long Lake .

Woodruff built a Dutch colonial house on Stewart Avenue in Garden City, New York .

Political activity

Woodruff moved to Brooklyn in 1881 , where he began his political career. He chaired the party events in Brooklyn and later served as chairman of the New York State Republican Committee . In January 1896 he was appointed Brooklyn Park Commissioner . In the same year, he asked the New York State Board of Regents , a Mixed College (Engl. Coeducational college ) to create in Brooklyn.

Woodruff was elected lieutenant governor of New York three times, in 1896, 1898, and 1900, and held that post between 1897 and 1902. He was the only lieutenant governor in New York history to serve under three different governors : Frank S. Black , Theodore Roosevelt, and Benjamin Barker Odell, Jr. As Lieutenant Governor, Woodruff played a leading role in the Association of the Protection of the Adirondacks (founded in 1901), where he helped implement Section XIV, Section 1 of the New York Constitution, New York's prized natural landscape placed under protection. Generally known as the "forever wild clause" , the law tries to protect the forest from being deserted by clear-cutting and extensive dykes. The group consisted of wealthy men, such as JP Morgan (1837–1913), who owned many private estates and wildlife parks in the Adirondacks.

Woodruff was the first President of the Board of Trustees at Adelphi College between 1896 and 1908 . He resigned from this post in 1908, but remained an active member until 1913.
