Albany Rural Cemetery

The Albany Rural Cemetery was on October 7, 1844 in the town of Colonie ( New York built), just outside of Albany , New York. He is known (as one of the most beautiful and idyllic Cemeteries Engl. Cemetery ) in the United States . Many historical American personalities are buried there.

On October 25, 1979, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places with number 79001566.

Distinguished burials

In 1886, the 21st President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, was buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery on Lot 8, Section 24, along with his wife, Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur , who had died in 1880. His memorial was designed by Ephraim Keyser and inaugurated on June 15, 1889. Friends of former President contributed a fund of 10,000  dollars ready made for the memorial and a statue in New York City were built.

John Van Buren , son of President Martin Van Buren , is buried with his wife Harriet. Known as "Prince John", John Van Buren died at sea on October 13, 1866, while traveling from Liverpool to New York. His tombstone in Parcel 28, Section 62 is marked by an Italian marble cross.

An 11 meter high Doric column at Lot 2, Section 29 commemorates General Philip Schuyler , Major General in the Continental Army , delegate to the Continental Congress and one of the first two elected US Senators from New York.

The last patroon , General Stephen Van Rensselaer , who died in 1839, was the founder of the Scientific School, which later became the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . His headstone is at Lot 1, Section 14. Also in the same grave is William Paterson , US Senator and Governor of New Jersey and a signatory to the United States Constitution . Paterson held until his death in 1806 the post of Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States .

Daniel Manning , who died in 1887, was a journalist, politician, and banker, and Treasury Secretary under President Grover Cleveland . His tombstone is in Parcel 5, Section 27.

Erastus Dow Palmer , a world-famous sculptor, is located on Lot 15, Section 34. He worked in a studio in Albany, where he made sculptures and portrait busts for many years before he died in 1904. He made two statues, the Robert Livingston Statue and Peace in Bondage, both on display today in the US Capitol in Washington, DC . Some of Mr. Palmer's work has markings in the cemetery, one of which is called "The Angel at the Sepulcher", which is located in Lot 1, Section 31 or Banks Grave Site. Palmer also designed the granite memorial for the grave of William L. Marcy , a United States senator and three-time governor of New York. The memorial is located at Lot 94, Section 62. Marcy also served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk and Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce . When he died in 1857, the relatives disagreed that Marcy "often expressed a desire to be buried where he had spent so much time reading and thinking."

On a circular grave site in Lot 2, Section 31 is the grave of Erastus Corning , founder and president of the New York Central Railroad . His great-grandson Erastus Corning III. , who was Mayor of Albany for 41 years and died in 1983, is also buried in the family grave site.

The Peckham family grave at Lot 19, Section 11 contains the remains of Rufus Wheeler Peckham , an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and his brother, Wheeler Hazard Peckham , a prominent New York City attorney and an unsuccessful candidate for one Supreme Court Judge . The grave site also includes a cenotaph of her father, New York Court of Appeals Justice and Congressman , Rufus Wheeler Peckham (1809–1873), who is missing at sea.

The Spencer family grave contains the remains of John Canfield Spencer , Secretary of War and Treasury of the United States under President John Tyler, and an unsuccessful candidate for Supreme Court Justice . His father, Ambrose Spencer , a prominent New York lawyer, judge, and politician, is also buried nearby.
