The New York Guard (also: The New York State Military Reserve ) is the state guard of the US state New York . As of June 2008, the New York Guard is provided as a recognized command under the New York State's Military law through line-item funding in the state budget.

In the past, the guard was divided into "Army Division" and "Air Division"; today the Guard has a unified command structure. The Guard's duties include supplementing, supporting and assisting with assignments for the New York Army National Guard and the New York Air National Guard , as well as auxiliary services for the civil authorities in New York State. New York also maintains the New York Naval Militia , which together with the State Guard and the Army and Air National Guard, the Command of the Governor of New York , the Adjutant General of New York and the Division of Military and Naval Affairs ( DMNA).

The New York Guard is one of the largest and best-organized state guards in the United States . It has its historical roots in state military units that were established during the War of Independence and the Civil War and have been repeatedly restructured in the course of history in the wake of various crises.

The Guard is subject to the military law of the state of New York and therefore may not be used for federal tasks and not even outside the state borders without the permission of the governor.

The members of the New York Guard are privileged in many respects and are treated in the same way in various areas as the other members of the Organized Militia of the State of New York (New York Army Guard, Air National Guard, New York Naval Militia and New York Guard). Among other things, they receive military leave (exemption for military missions).

history

Civil war time

The Seventh New York Regiment in Washington, DC, 1861.

Many units of the New York State Militia took part in the American Civil War after President Abraham Lincoln activated them.

This activation of the State Militia led to certain conflicts with the commanders of the New York authorities:

“With the start of the Civil War in April 1861, the 14th Regiment was on its first service in the defense of the Brooklyn Navy Yard . In mid-April of the same year, the Brooklyn Chasseurs were ready to leave New York for Washington DC. Colonel Alfred M. Wood notified the Honorable Governor Morgan that the regiment was ready to march and had accepted a three year commitment to the confederation. The governor did not want to issue a marching order to leave New York. While camping at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, Col. Wood and Congressman Moses O'Dell went to President Lincoln for orders to march to Washington. President Lincoln wasted no time in issuing marching orders for the 14th Brooklyners. When Governor Morgan learned that the regiment was preparing to march, he telegraphed Col. Wood asking “what authorization” he was moving his regiment, to which Col. Wood coolly replied, “With the authorization of the President of the United States. ““

After the Civil War, an attempt was made to place the various military units in New York under a single command. For this reason, the 53rd Troop Command (3rd Brigade, New York State Militia) was formed on August 5, 1886.

World war time

The later unit of the "104th Field Artillery" experienced various organizational changes. It served briefly under federal supervision, from November 5, 1916, as a border control to Mexico and was again subordinated to the state on November 15, 1916. Then, during World War I , on August 5, 1917, it was named the 104th Field Artillery and sent to France for service .

On August 3, 1917, the Adjutant General of New York reinstated the New York Guard as a state military unit to meet the requirements of the State Constitution, which stipulates that troops should be made available to the governor Ensure the protection of the life and property of New York citizens. The new force replaced the previous New York National Guard , which entered service with the United States two days later. The new force consisted of the First and Second Provisional Regiment (First and Second Auxiliary Regiment ) and had the task of protecting aqueducts and other infrastructure in the southern part (First Provisional Regiment) and in the remaining areas of the state.

On January 1, 1919, the Guard had 22,000 members. After the 1918 armistice , the New York National Guard units that had been subordinate to the United States were returned to state control.

104th Field Artillery Armory

After the First World War, the unit was demobilized, but reactivated soon after in the New York National Guard until it was reorganized as the 104th Field Artillery Regiment in 1959 .

With the entry of the USA into World War II , the New York National Guard was again subordinated to the federal government.

post war period

In the early 1990s it was reorganized again, relocated to the Jamaica Queens Armory barracks and renamed "2nd Battalion, 104th Regiment".

present

In the tremors following September 11, 2001 , the New York Guard provided security, disaster relief, legal, and communications services, and other services to New York City and the surrounding areas in partnership with the National Guard. Major General John F. Bahrenburg was the commandant of the New York Guard at the time (term: 1999–2002).

In the aftermath of the attacks, the New York Guard experienced a resurgence. Units were activated to take on various tasks, including logistical support for the emergency services at Ground Zero . The medical units worked alongside other providers at various locations, including Camp Smith , Westchester County .

Individual units were mobilized for special operations, for example in the summer of 2006 to search for a missing camper in Adirondack Park or to provide disaster relief during Hurricane Irene 2011.

2012 saw the largest deployment since September 11, 2001. Each brigade was at least partially activated for readiness during the 'Superstorm' Sandy . The members of the New York Guard served on an equal footing with members of the Army National Guard , Air National Guard and New York Naval Militia and provided up to a third of all troops deployed during the two-month mobilization .
