After the Civil War, an attempt was made to place the various military units in New York under a single command. For this reason, the 53rd Troop Command (3rd Brigade, New York State Militia) was formed on August 5, 1886. Since the Militia Act , state militia associations have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force. On August 3, 1917, the Adjutant General of New York established the New York Guard as a state military unit, since the New York National Guard was temporarily taken over into the service of the United States and was used in France during World War I.
