Illinois National Guard

The Illinois National Guard of the US state of Illinois is part of the United States National Guard ( acronymized USNG ) established in 1903 and thus also part of the second level of the military reserve of the United States Armed Forces .

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker are subject. The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . Adjutant General of Illinois has been Brigadier General Richard R. Neely since 2019.

The Illinois National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . Separate from this is the state guard , the Idaho State Guard (active 1917-1919 and 1941-1946), which is only obliged to the state.

In 2017, the Illinois Army National Guard had 9,810 and the Illinois Air National Guard 2,894, for a total of 12,704.

history

The Illinois National Guard traces its roots back to armed units of French settlers of 1718 and militia units of the Illinois Territory created in 1809 . Brigadier General Arthur Ducat reorganized the Illinois militia formations in 1873. The state national guards have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 and may, under certain circumstances, be used by the federal level with the approval of Congress . Separate from this is the state guard , the Illinois Reserve Militia (active from 1917 to 1919 and 1941 to 1946), which is solely committed to the state.
