organization

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor of Guam Lou Leon Guerrero are subject. The national guards of the states and territories have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army (and air force) since 1903 , so that the federal level may fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress . The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . Adjutant General of Guam has been Major General (GU) Esther Aguigui since 2019.

The Guam National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and the Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . The Guam Army National Guard had 1,092 staff in 2017, and the Guam Air National Guard 355, for a total of 1,447.

history

The Guam National Guard traces its roots back to militia units established under Spanish colonial administration in 1771, which were disbanded in 1885. In the Spanish-American War , Guam was conquered by US troops on June 21, 1898 without bloodshed. In Guam, a militia, the Guam Militia, was not set up again until March 25, 1917 under US Naval Governor Roy C. Smith . On December 8, 1941, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor , Guam was attacked and captured by the Japanese . The Guam Militia lost six of its volunteers. With the landing of American troops on July 21, the second Battle of Guam began , which ended with the victory of the US forces on August 10, after the Japanese defenders had put up bitter resistance for almost three weeks. In 1950, Governor Carlton Skinner re-established the Guam Militia. In 1980, the Guam National Guard was formed from the Guam Militia.
