The Arkansas National Guard (ARNG), also known as the Arkansas Guard , is the military of the US state of Arkansas . It was founded in 1804 and is part of the established in 1903, National Guard of the United States ( akronymisiert USNG ) and thus also part of the second level of the military reserve of the United States Armed Forces .

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson are subject. The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . Adjutant General of Arkansas has been Major General Kendall W. Penn since 2019.

The Arkansas National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and the Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . The Arkansas Army National Guard had 6,158 personnel in 2017 and the Arkansas Air National Guard 1,843, which results in a total of 8001 personnel.

Separate from the units of the National Guard are the state guards, such as the currently inactive Arkansas State Guard , which would only be obliged to the state.

history

Arkansas came in 1803 as part of the Louisiana -Landkaufs ( Louisiana Purchase ) to the United States. The Arkansas National Guard traces its roots back to 1804 militia associations. Arkansas came on May 6 in 1861 from the Union, its militias fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy . After the Reconstruction , the re-admission into the Union took place on June 22, 1868. The national guards of the states have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 , so that the federal level can fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress . The National Guard has been used in every major conflict below, in the First and Second World War and the Korean War . In 1925, the 154th Observation Squadron was the first unit of today's Arkansas Air National Guard. After the attacks of September 11, 2001 , the National Guard was involved in the war on terror . a. also used in Iraq and Afghanistan .

The Arkansas National Guard played an important role in desegregation in American schools. The state governor at the time, Orval Faubus , used the Arkansas National Guard in 1957 to block the way for black teenagers, the Little Rock Nine , into their schools. To enforce federal law, President Eisenhower finally placed the Arkansas 10,000-strong National Guard under federal command on September 24 and had the black students escorted to school by the National Guard with bayonets attached to opposition from the white mob.

The state governors also repeatedly use the National Guard in the event of natural disasters and similar events. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 , more than 50,000 National Guardsmen from all states were mobilized.
