The district of Oyolo is located in the province of Páucar del Sara Sara in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded in 1823. It has an area of ​​794 km². The 2017 census counted 1525 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1002, in 2007 it was 1,166. The district administration is located in the 3400  m high village of Oyolo with 633 inhabitants (as of 2017). Oyolo is located 20 km northeast of the provincial capital Pausa . The 4980  m high cinder cone Cerro Auquihuato is located on the western border of the district .

Geographical location

The district of Oyolo is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northeast of the province of Páucar del Sara Sara. It has a longitudinal extent in SSW-NNE direction of almost 47 km and a maximum width of almost 30 km. The district extends over the upper catchment area of the Río Oyolo, which crosses the area in a south-southwest direction and later flows into the Río Huanca Huanca.

The district of Oyolo borders on the district of San José de Ushua in the south, on the districts of Colta and San Javier de Alpabamba in the south-west, on the districts of San Francisco de Ravacayco and Pacapausa (both in the province of Parinacochas ) in the north, in the north the district of Coronel Castañeda (also in the province of Parinacochas) and in the east to the districts of Pampamarca and Charcana (both in the province of La Unión ).
