The Colta district is located in the Páucar del Sara Sara province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on July 24, 1952. It has an area of ​​248 km². The 2017 census counted 496 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 366, in 2007 it was 797. The district administration is based in the 3300  m high village of Colta with 324 inhabitants (as of 2017). Colta is 14 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Pausa . On the eastern border of the district is the 4980  m high cinder cone Cerro Auquihuato .

Geographical location

The Colta district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the center of the Páucar del Sara Sara province. It is bounded in the southwest by the Río Huanca Huanca and in the northeast and south by the Río Oyolo.

The Colta district borders the Pausa district in the extreme south, the Lampa and Marcabamba districts in the west, the San Javier de Alpabamba district in the northwest, the Oyolo district in the northeast and east and the San José de Ushua districts in the southeast and Corculla .
