The Coronel Castañeda district is located in the Parinacochas Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was probably named after José Santos Castañeda, who was interim president of the Peruvian National Assembly in September 1855. The district was established on June 28, 1955. It has an area of ​​1081 km². The 2017 census counted 1767 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 582, in 2007 it was 1290. The district administration is based in the 3620  m high village of Aniso with 469 inhabitants (as of 2017). Aniso is about 60 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Coracora .

Geographical location

The Coronel Castañeda district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the far east of the Parinacochas province. The district has a longitudinal extension in the WSW-ONO direction of almost 62 km, and a maximum width of about 19 km. In the far east rises the 5224  m high Cerro Lunco (Lunq'u). The Río Pallancata crosses the district initially in a westerly direction, later in a west-southwestern direction and flows in the far west of the district into the Río Huanca Huanca, which flows south. The district is flanked by a ridge in the south and north.

The Coronel Castañeda district is bordered by the Upahuacho district in the west, the Cotaruse district ( Aymaraes province ) in the northwest, the Antabamba district ( Antabamba province ) in the northeast, the Pampamarca district ( La Unión province ) in the south-east , and the central south the district of Oyolo ( province of Páucar del Sara Sara ) and in the southwest to the district of Pacapausa .
