Lourdes Aflague Leon Guerrero (born November 8, 1950 in Guam ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She has been the governor of Guam since 2019 .

Career

After graduating from the Academy of Our Lady of Guam High School, Leon Guerrero moved to California to study health and nursing at California State University, Los Angeles . Following her bachelor's degree in 1973, she began studying public health at the University of California, Los Angeles , which she was able to complete in 1979 with a master's degree in public health. During her time in California and after her return to Guam in 1980, she worked as a nurse, where she soon rose to a managerial position.

Leon Guerrero first ran successfully for a seat in the Guam Legislature in 1994 and accepted her mandate in 1995. She ran in 1998 as a candidate for the office of lieutenant governor, but was defeated together with Senator Thomas C. Ada, who ran for the office of governor, in the Democratic primary to the incumbent Carl TC Gutierrez . In 2005 she retired from politics for the time being and took up postgraduate studies at the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington , which she was able to complete in 2009. She then followed her father in managerial positions at the Bank of Guam.

In 2017, she announced that she would run for governor in 2018 along with Joshua Tenorio, who was running for the office of lieutenant governor. After she could just prevail in the Democratic Party's primary election, she won the main election with 50.7% of the vote against Ray Tenorio from the Republican Party . She took office in 2019.
