Yoo Jeong-yeon (born November 1, 1996 in Suwon , Gyeonggi-do ) is a South Korean singer and member of the girl group Twice . Mostly she appears under her mononym Jeongyeon ( Hangeul : 정연 ).

life and career

Jeongyeon was born as Yoo Kyung-wan ( Korean 유경완 ) but changed her name in the third grade because her original name sounded like a boy's name. She has two older sisters, including actress Gong Seung-yeon . Her father worked for the former President of South Korea Kim Dae-jung as a cook. Before she became a trainee at JYP Entertainment at the agency in 2010 , she had already applied for admission without success. There she also appeared briefly in a Got7 music video .

Originally Jeongyeon, like Nayeon and Jihyo , should have participated in the 6mix group planned by JYPE. However, this project was terminated by the agency.

In July 2015, she emerged victorious from the casting show Sixteen, in which she was selected as one of the nine future members of Twice. Jeongyeon helped write the lyrics for the songs Love Line , Sweet Talker , LaLaLa , 21:29 and Sweet Summer Day .

At the beginning of her career, Jeongyeon caused a sensation, especially with her short hairstyle, as it clearly set her apart from her eight group colleagues.

In a fan poll by Gallup Korea , Jeongyeon was ranked 12th among the most popular idols in 2019 .
