Hirai Momo ( Japanese 平井 も も ; born November 9, 1996 in Kyōtanabe , Kyōto Prefecture ) is a Japanese singer and dancer . She is a member of the South Korean girl group Twice .

Mostly she appears under her mononym Momo ( も も ; Hangeul : 모모 ).

life and career

Hirai Momo was born on November 9, 1996 in Kyōtanabe . She started dancing with her older sister at the age of three.

Momo was early on in the South Korean music industry when she appeared in a music video for singer Lexy in 2008 and on the talent show Superstar K in 2011 . Momo and her sister were discovered in an online video by JYP Entertainment in 2012 and invited to a casting together, but only Momo was successful. In April 2012 she then moved to South Korea.

In 2015 Momo took part in the South Korean reality television show Sixteen , hosted by JYP Entertainment and co-produced by Mnet . Although she was eliminated from the program, which was designed in elimination rounds, she was brought back at the end of the competition and was allowed to join the newly formed girl group Twice.

In Gallup Korea's annual music poll for 2018, Momo was voted the 20th most popular idol in South Korea, making it one of the most popular non-Korean K-pop stars. Their popularity has even been linked to improving relations between South Korea and Japan. Known for her physical fitness and expressive body movements, she is also called the dance machine in fan circles . In this regard, Momo has previously been described as the best dancer in the group Twice.

Private life

On January 2, 2020, the label SJ and JYP Entertainment confirmed that Momo is currently dating Kim Hee-chul , who is almost 13 years older and a singer in the group Super Junior .
