Mina Myōi ( Japanese 名 井 南 Myōi Mina ; born March 24, 1997 in San Antonio , Texas ) is a Japanese - American singer and dancer . She is a member of the South Korean girl group Twice .

Mostly she occurs under her mononym Mina ( 名 井 or ミ ナ ; Hangeul : 미나 ). Her last name is also occasionally spelled Myoui .

life and career

Mina, who has an older brother, was born in the United States but grew up in the Japanese city of Kobe the Hyōgo Prefecture , where they are already at a young age ballet lessons took. Her father works as an orthopedic surgeon in Osaka . Due to her place of birth, she is also a citizen of the USA in addition to the citizenship of Japan because of the ius soli principle anchored in the 14th Amendment of the United States' constitution .

In Osaka she was discovered by a talent scout from JYP Entertainment while on a shopping trip with her mother . At this point she had been taking ballet lessons for eleven years. According to her own statement, Mina's parents were initially not enthusiastic about the change in perspective for their daughter's career.

After moving to South Korea in 2014 , she took part in the casting show Sixteen , co-produced by JYP Entertainment and Mnet, a year later . From this she finally emerged successfully together with eight other singers, who from now on work as the girl group Twice. In a popularity poll by the Gallup Organization , she was ranked 16th among the most popular idols in 2019 .

Time out

In July 2019, Minas herself took time out from show business, which subsequently had to cancel her participation in a world tour planned by Twice, which was widely discussed in the media and in fan circles . In some places it was thought possible that anti-Japanese resentment was the trigger for the singer's psychological problems. She was later diagnosed with an anxiety disorder . Since January 2020 she has been participating in joint group events again.
