Minatozaki Sana ( Japanese 湊 﨑 紗 夏 ; born December 29, 1996 in Tennōji-ku , Osaka ) is a Japanese singer and member of the South Korean girl group Twice .

Mostly she occurs under her mononym Sana ( 紗 夏 ; Hangeul : 사나 ).

life and career

Minatozaki Sana was born on December 29, 1996 in Osaka ( Japan ). In 2012 she was discovered by a talent scout from the music agency JYP Entertainment in Osaka and moved to South Korea in April of the same year to complete the training program at JYP Entertainment as a trainee . In 2015 she took part in the casting show Sixteen , where she was selected as one of the nine members for the debut of the new girl group Twice. Shortly afterwards, Twice released the EP The Story Begins and the music video for Like OOH-AHH on October 20, 2015 through the platform V Live . This now has more than 300 million views on YouTube .

Controversy over the handover of the Japanese Tennō

In May 2019, apart from her musical activities, Sana caught the attention of international media. When the handover of the Japanese Tennō Akihito to his son Naruhito and thus the end of the Heisei period (1989-2019) and the beginning of the Reiwa period was imminent, Sana wrote an emotional message about the upcoming event on Twice's Instagram account . She wrote in Japanese that, as a person who was born in the Heisei period, she was sad that it was now ending, but at the same time would like to wish the new Reiwa period all the best. This posting caused critical feedback, especially in South Korea. She was accused of working in South Korea but advocating Japanese affairs. This was discussed above all against the background of the colonization of Korea by Japan . For a few days no new posts were published on the Instagram account. At the end of May 2019, Sana contacted her account in Korean, apologized and thanked her fans for the support she had received.

Comparable controversies about Twice overtook members Tzuyu in 2015 when she showed the flag of the Republic of China on a television broadcast and thus caused displeasure in the People's Republic of China , and Dahyun in 2018 when she stood up for the so-called comfort women .

Music video appearances

In addition to her musical contributions with Twice, Sana appeared in 2014 in the music video of the song "A" by the group Got7 and in the video for "Feel" by the singer Junho of the group 2PM before she became known with her group . In 2016 she appeared in the music video of the song "Instant Love" and thus again in a contribution by Junho.

Sana helped create the lyrics to the Twice songs "Shot Thru the Heart", "21:29" and "Turn It Up".
