William Corbett (politician)

William T. Corbett (born March 23, 1902 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  April 17, 1971 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . In 1956 he was acting governor of Guam .

Career

William Corbett was the older brother of Congressman Robert J. Corbett (1905–1971) from Pennsylvania. After his college days, during which he also appeared as a track and field athlete, he studied at the University of Pittsburgh . After studying law at the same university and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. He specialized in cases related to accident insurance. He was also the assistant district attorney and district judge in the greater Pittsburgh area.

In 1956, Corbett was named Secretary of State of Guam by the Federal Republican government under President Dwight D. Eisenhower . In this office he was also the representative of Governor Ford Quint Elvidge . After his resignation he had to take over this function temporarily and exercise it from May 19 to October 2, 1956.

After the end of his time as governor, William Corbett returned to the American mainland, where he worked for 13 years as a solicitor ( solicitor for contract appeals ) for the US Department of the Interior between 1957 and 1970 . He died on April 17, 1971 at the Northern Virginia Doctors Hospital in Arlington.
