Joseph Franklin Ada

Joseph Franklin Ada (born December 3, 1943 in Tamuning , Guam ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1995 he was governor of Guam.

Career

Joseph Ada attended the College of Guam for two years and then studied at the University of Portland in Oregon until 1968 . After returning to Guam in 1970, he became the deputy director of the Public Works Bureau. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Guam legislature for five terms and chaired it from 1975 to 1979. Between 1979 and 1982 he served as Lieutenant Governor under Governor Paul McDonald Calvo .

In 1986, Ada was elected the new governor of Guam. On January 5, 1987, he replaced Ricardo Bordallo . After being re-elected, he was able to exercise this office until January 2, 1995. During this time he promoted the economic development of the US territory. He also managed to get back land that was previously used by the military. Joseph Ada is the only politician in Guam to have served as both president of the state legislature, lieutenant governor, and governor. He was also the first governor of the area to be elected for a second term.

In 1998 he unsuccessfully applied to return to the office of governor. In 2000 he was re-elected as a senator to the legislature . Two years later he ran unsuccessfully for the post of Congress delegate from Guam. Joseph Ada is married and has three children.
