James Sutherland Spore

James Sutherland Spore (born May 13, 1885 in Bay City , Michigan , †  April 28, 1937 in La Mesa , California ) was an American naval officer. He was acting military governor of the US suburbs of Guam and American Samoa .

Career

James Spore graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). He then served as an officer in the United States Navy . There he made it to Commander, which corresponds to a lieutenant colonel in the army. His most famous role during his time as a naval officer was the provisional exercise of the office of military governor of Guam between February 27, 1921 and February 7, 1922. Later he was also governor of American Samoa. He held this office between March 24 and April 22, 1931. In 1933 he was stationed in San Pedro , a suburb of Los Angeles .

Spore spent his old age in La Mesa, where he died on April 28, 1937. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia . James Spore was married with three children. Some of his descendants served or are still serving in the US Navy.
