Ralph Waldo Hungerford (born April 21, 1896 in Windsor , Broome County , New York , †  February 20, 1977 in Abington , Pennsylvania ) was an American naval officer. In 1945 he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

Ralph Hungerford was born in New York and raised in Rhode Island . He also had his first residence there. In 1919 he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). In the following years he served as an officer in the United States Navy , in which he was to rise over time to captain. During the Second World War in 1941 he was a member of the staff of the Naval Commander in Defense of the East Coast . He was responsible for anti-submarine defense.

On January 27, 1945, Hungerford was appointed to succeed Allen Hobbs as the new governor of American Samoa. He held this office until September 3 of the same year. His main interest was the restoration of indigenous industries neglected by World War II. This also included reducing the unemployment rate. At the same time, Hungerford made sure that the schools that were closed during the war were reopened. He worked with the local population.

Nothing is known about Hungerford's résumé after his time as governor. He died in Abington on February 20, 1977.
