George Landenberger (1932)

George Bertram Landenberger (born May 12, 1879 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † January 15, 1936 there ) was an American naval officer. Between 1932 and 1934 he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

George graduated Landsberger in 1900 United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). He then served on various ships, including the USS Alabama and the USS Louisiana , as well as on two naval bases as an officer in the United States Navy . By the end of his military career he had achieved the rank of captain. At first he was assigned to the Pacific Fleet. He then temporarily moved to the Atlantic fleet. For his military achievements as captain of the battleship USS Indiana during the First World War , he was awarded the Navy Cross . In the 1920s, Landenberger was back in the American Pacific Fleet. Between 1924 and 1926 he commanded the destroyer fleet there. Otherwise he was in command of the warships USS Pennsylvania and USS Arkansas . In the early 1930s he was chief of staff in the 12th Marine District, which included the Panama Canal Zone . He then commanded the Goat Island naval base on Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay .

George Landenberger was Governor of American Samoa from May 12, 1932 to April 10, 1934. He then headed the naval shipyard in Philadelphia. In 1935 he retired from military service. He died of cancer on January 15, 1936 in Philadelphia.
