Charles Armijo Woodruff (born January 12, 1884 in Santa Fe , New Mexico , †  November 23, 1945 in New York City ) was an American naval officer. He was the military governor of American Samoa in 1914 and 1915 .

Career

Charles Woodruff attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ) from 1902 and then served as an officer in the United States Navy . By the time he left, he had attained the rank of commander , roughly equivalent to a lieutenant colonel in the army. In 1906 he served on the warship USS Pampanga . Between December 6, 1914 and March 1, 1915, he succeeded Nathan Post as governor of American Samoa. He then passed this position on to John Martin Poyer .

After his time in the Navy, Charles Woodruff served in the US Merchant Navy . On November 23, 1945, he hanged himself from a curtain rod in a New York hotel room. This must have happened in a state of mental confusion. He stated (probably in a suicide note) that he had missed his ship and therefore could no longer earn any money.
