Vernon Huber

Vernon Huber (born August 28, 1899 in Philadelphia , Cass County , Illinois , †  June 17, 1967 in Los Altos , California ) was an American naval officer. Between 1947 and 1949 he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

Between 1918 and 1922 graduated from Vernon Huber, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). In the following years he served on various ships as an officer in the US Navy . At the end of his military career, he had made it to the position of rear admiral. He served primarily in the Atlantic during World War II and commanded the destroyer USS Livermore during that time .

Huber was best known as the governor of American Samoa. He held this office between April 22, 1947 and July 7, 1949 as the successor to Harold Alexander Houser . During this time he promoted the self-government of the local population. At that time, the American Samoa Fono parliament met for the first time . However, the governor retained a right of veto over the decisions of this House of Representatives.

After the end of his time as governor, Huber remained in the Navy until 1953, where he held several staff and command posts. He died on June 17, 1967 in a Los Altos hospital.
