The Pennsylvania National Guard (PANG) of the state of Pennsylvania has existed under this name since 1870 and is part of the United States National Guard ( acronymized USNG ) established in 1903 and thus also part of the second instance of the military reserve of the United States' armed forces .

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor (currently Tom Wolf subject to). The current Adjutant General of Pennsylvania is Anthony J. Carelli. The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . The Pennsylvania National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . Separate from this is the state guard , the Pennsylvania State Guard (currently inactive), which is solely obliged to the state. The Pennsylvania Army National Guard (as of 2017) has a population of 15,476, the Pennsylvania Air National Guard one of 3,799, i.e. a total of 19,275. The Pennsylvania National Guard is the second largest National Guard personnel in the United States.

The Pennsylvania National Guard traces its roots back to 1747 Province of Pennsylvania militia units that u. a. fought in the Revolutionary War and the British-American War of 1812. During the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, the state sided with the northern states . The national guards of the states have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 , so that the federal level can fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress . The National Guard has been used in every major conflict below, as in the First and Second World War and the Korean War . After the attacks of September 11, 2001 , the National Guard was involved in the war on terror . a. also used in Iraq and Afghanistan . The Pennsylvania National Guard also carried out numerous internal operations. In 2005 the National Guard was called in as a result of Hurricane Katrina and 125,000 National Guardsmen from all states were deployed.
