The Alaska National Guard (AKNG) of the US state of Alaska ( Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs ) has existed under this name since 1940 and is part of the National Guard of the United States ( acronymized USNG ) established in 1903 and thus also part of the second level the military reserve of the United States Armed Forces .

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen who the governor of Alaska Mike J. Dunleavy are subject. The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . Adjutant General of Alaska has been Brigadier General Torrence Saxe since 2019. The national guards of the states have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 , so that the federal level can fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress .

The Alaska National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and the Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . Separate from this are the State Guard , the Alaska State Defense Force and the Alaska Naval Militia , which are solely committed to the state.

history

The Alaska National Guard was formed in Europe in 1940 with the outbreak of World War II. The 207th Infantry Battalion was disbanded in 1960. Newly activated units of the Alaska National Guard have been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2005 .
