The Georgia National Guard of the US state of Georgia is part of the established in 1903, National Guard of the United States ( akronymisiert USNG ) and thus also part of the second level of the military reserve of the United States Armed Forces .

organization

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp are subject. The President of the United States is the commander-in-chief for federal missions . Adjutant General of Georgia has served as Major General Thomas M. Carden Jr. since 2019.

The Georgia National Guard traces its roots back to the Province of Georgia militia associations of 1751. The national guards of the states have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 , so that the federal level can fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress . Separate from this are the State Guard , the Georgia State Defense Force and the Georgia Naval Militia (currently inactive), which are solely committed to the state. The Georgia National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . The Georgia Army National Guard had 10,789 staff in 2017 and the Georgia Air National Guard 2687 staff for a total of 13,476 staff.
