The California National Guard of the state of California has existed since 1849 and is part of the California Military Department (CMD) and the United States National Guard ( acronymized USNG ) established in 1903 , thus also the second instance of the military reserve of the United States' armed forces .

The members of the National Guard are voluntary service payable militiamen that the Governor (currently Gavin Newsom subject to). The current Adjutant General of California is David S. Baldwin. The California National Guard traces its roots back to 1849 militia organizations. The national guards of the states have been federally and institutionally closely linked to the regular army and air force since 1903 , so that the federal level can fall back on them under certain circumstances with the consent of Congress .

Separate from this is the state guard , the California State Guard , which has also included a Naval Militia since 2015 and is solely obliged to the state.

The California National Guard consists of the two branches of the Army and Air Force , namely the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard . The California Army National Guard (as of 2017) has a population of 13,846, the California Air National Guard one of 4,378, so has a total of 18,224. The California National Guard it the third largest National Guard personnel in the United States. It has its own military academy, the California Military Academy at Camp San Luis Obispo .
