Styl (spelling: STYL) was an illustrated Berlin fashion journal with the subtitle Blätter für Mode and the pleasant things in life , which was published by the Association of the German Fashion Industry, supported by Berlin fashion houses such as the Gerson department store .

history

Styl appeared with a total of 17 issues from 1922 to 1924 in small editions and bibliophile equipment and was dedicated to the type of the new woman of the twenties. It contained hand-colored or stencil-colored graphics and fashion drawings by artists. including Jeanne Mammen , Lieselotte Friedlaender , Annie Offterdinger and Ludwig Kainer as well as literary texts and cultural reviews by Claire Goll , Klabund and Alfred Kerr . The fashion illustrator Robert L. Leonard (1879– after 1942) was the artistic and literary director. The leading fashion journalists in Berlin such as Elsa Herzog , Julie Elias and Margarete Liebmann wrote in Styl . The journal also dealt with spatial art and modern lifestyle. Illustrated home stories reported on interior fittings. In the three years of its existence, Styl published 548 articles by 63 authors.

The issuing association had the goal of developing a stylistically independent fashion industry in Germany and thus becoming independent of Paris as the leading fashion city. After French troops occupied the Rhineland due to Germany's failure to pay reparations , in 1923 he made a declaration in style to call for a boycott of French fashion products.

The luxuriously presented journal was not economically successful. It was discontinued after the currency reform of 1924.

The entire volumes are now in the possession of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in the “Modebild” collection of the Lipperheide Costume Library .
