The Lipperheide Costume Library was founded by Franz von Lipperheide and was donated to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin on March 19, 1892 .

history

Franz and Frida von Lipperheide founded the Franz Lipperheide publishing house in Berlin in 1865 and published the fashion magazines Die Modenwelt , the illustrated newspaper for toilets and handicrafts , the illustrated women's magazine and Der Bazar , which had over 500,000 subscribers worldwide. Franz von Lipperheide, with his interest in cultural-historical costume studies and textile art from Europe, systematically compiled a collection of sources on costume studies. In 1896 the "Freiherrlich Lipperheid'sche Collection for Costume Science" contained 686 oil paintings, 200 miniature portraits, 2750 hand drawings, 23,750 prints and reproductions, 2580 photographs, 5560 monographs, 840 almanacs and 2185 magazines.

On March 19, 1892, the collection for costume science was donated to the Royal Museums in Berlin . Since then, the Lipperheide Costume Library has been run as an independent department of the Berlin State Museums Art Library. The collection is constantly expanding with around 200 new acquisitions per year. Since then, exhibitions have taken place in Berlin and Germany.

The Lipperheide Costume Library is the world's largest specialist collection on the cultural history of clothing and fashion.

In 1990 the costume library had 31,800 monographs and magazines, 167 albums with hand drawings, 81 albums with photographs, approx. 100,000 sheets of graphics, 8,000 hand drawings and 36,000 fashion photographs. The collection includes image and written sources on all areas of international clothing and fashion history, such as travel and festivities, sports and games, dance and theater, etiquette and table culture, and caricature and dress codes. Special emphasis is placed on costume and fashion designs from the Renaissance to the present, international fashion illustrations and fashion photography from the 20th century.
