Edward H. Smith

Edward Henry Smith (born May 5, 1809 in Smithtown , New York , † August 7, 1885 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Henry Smith was born and raised in Smithtown three years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended private schools and then worked in agriculture. As a justice of the peace he was between 1833 and 1843 in the township of Smithtown and as assessor ( assessor ) between 1840 and 1843. He was between 1856 and 1860 town supervisor . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1860 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Luther C. Carter on March 4, 1861 . Civil war broke out about a month later . Since he refused to run again in 1862 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1863 . After that he worked in agriculture again. He died in Smithtown on August 7, 1885 and was buried in St. James' Protestant Episcopal Cemetery in St. James .
