St. James is a place on Long Island in the US state of New York . It is referred to as an unincorporated hamlet , so it does not have its own administrative structures, and it also corresponds to a census-designated place (statistical area). It belongs to Smithtown in Suffolk County . According to the 2010 census, it had 13,338 inhabitants.

St. James has an area of 11.8 km² and is completely inland on the island. It is bordered to the north by Head of the Harbor , west by the main town of Smithtown and Village of the Branch , south by Nesconset , southeast by Lake Grove and east by Stony Brook .
St. James is more densely populated than the coastal towns and is primarily characterized by closed housing developments.
history
For a long time there were only a few houses in the area, until the name first appeared for a newly founded Episcopalian community in 1856 and the population increased. Further development accelerated after the establishment of the Long Island Rail Road in 1872 and through economic growth around the turn of the century. In the early 20th century, St. James was also a popular holiday resort at times. The eminent architect Stanford White is buried in St. James.
Economy and Infrastructure
St. James has a stop on the LIRR route between Port Jefferson and Penn Station . The largest mall in the area, Smith Haven Mall , is on the border of St. James and Lake Grove. Just east of St. James is the public Stony Brook University .
