Head of the Harbor is a location on the north coast of Long Island in the US state of New York . It has incorporated village status and belongs to Smithtown in Suffolk County . According to the 2010 census, the village had 1,472 inhabitants.

The Bay

Head of the Harbor has an area of ​​7.9 km², of which 7.3 km² is land and 0.6 km² is water. It is not directly on Long Island Sound , but a swampy bay, the Stony Brook Harbor . It is adjacent to Stony Brook to the east, St. James to the south, the main town of Smithtown to the southwest, and Nissequogue to the northwest .

In the south of the village area there is a denser development going over from St. James, but the majority consists of sparsely populated forest area and some agricultural areas, especially for vineyards .

history

The first building by European settlers began in 1677 by Adam Smith , the son of the founder of Smithtown, Richard Smith . The village area was then counted to the Stony Brook Neck and the bay was called Three Sisters Harbor . The name (English for head or tip of the port ) refers to the location at the southwest end of the bay. The incorporation took place in 1928.

Culture and sights

In Head of the Harbor, many farm and residential houses from the 19th century have been preserved, which is why the village is known as a Historic Village .

Infrastructure

The Long Island Rail Road stop between Port Jefferson and Penn Station is right on the border with Head of the Harbor.
