geography
It is separated from the sound by a dune peninsula called Long Beach , which belongs to Nissequogue . The passage is about 130 meters wide. Head of the Harbor and Stony Brook are on the south bank . The inflow West Meadow Creek in the north-east of the bay makes for Old Field belonging beach West Meadow Beach in further peninsula. Another, smaller tributary is the Stony Brook Creek coming from the south ; Depending on the season, there is another stream at the southwest tip.
The bay has a total area of about 4.8 km², of which 3.0 km² is open water. The remainder belong to several islands, the largest of which is Youngs Island , or are largely solid marshland. The coastline is about 23 km long. The bay has strong tides , at low tide the average depth is only about 0.9 m.
Emergence
The bay goes back to a river valley that formed 60 to 70 million years ago, which was then widened and leveled by glaciers in the Pleistocene . The alluvial sand of Long Beach and West Meadow Beach was created after the retreat of the glaciation by material carried away by waves and currents in Nissequogue and thus closed the bay.
nature
Most of the vegetation consists of salt marshes , especially silt grass . The dominant species is Spartina alterniflora , Spartina patens and Distichlis spicata are also common. Numerous juvenile fish of species such as sea bass ( Morone saxatilis ), blue fish , Atlantic menhaden ( Brevoortia tyrannus ) and plaice ( Pseudopleuronectes americanus , Paralichthys dentatus ) grow up here.
use
The bay is listed by New York State as both a Natural District and a Historic District because of the surrounding towns . On the shore of Stony Brook there is a marina and a small urban swimming beach called Sand Street Beach , otherwise the bay is also used for fishing and water sports. It is completely untouched by industry.
