David A. Bokee
David Alexander Bokee (born October 6, 1805 in New York City , † March 15, 1860 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1851 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
David Alexander Bokee was born and raised in New York City about seven years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended public schools and then went on to do business. Bokee studied law and began practicing as a lawyer after receiving his license. He was President of the Brooklyn Board of Aldermen from 1840 to 1843 and from 1845 to 1848 . He also served in the New York Senate from 1846 to 1849 and served as a trustee for New York Life Insurance Co. from 1848 to 1860 . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1848 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the second constituency of New York, where he succeeded Henry C. Murphy on March 4, 1849 . He retired from the after March 3, 1851 Congress of. President Fillmore then named him Naval Officer of Customs for the Port of New York , a position he held from 1851 to 1853. Bokee then also worked in merchant shipping . He died in Washington DC about a year before the outbreak of the Civil War on March 15, 1860, and was then buried in Green-Wood Cemetery , Brooklyn.
