Caleb Tompkins (born December 22, 1759 in Scarsdale , Province of New York , † January 1, 1846 in Scarsdale, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Caleb Tompkins grew up during the British colonial era. He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1804 and 1806 . He then served as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas and the District Court of Westchester County between 1807 and 1811 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In the congressional elections of 1816 Tompkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of New York , where he succeeded Jonathan Ward on March 4, 1817 .
